Kogahara ochite kokemusu kusamura ni
Kokoro nagaku mo sumeru tsuki kana
[The incised poem winds around the bowl]
Across the ancient fields
Bunches of moss
Mingle with thick grass;
My heart, too, is brightened
By the pure moonlight.
This is a classic Rengetsu tea bowl sturdily made with strong clay and with a thick glaze. Even though the calligraphy was incised in wet clay, the characters move freely up, down, and around the bowl, perfectly placed, and constructed with confidence. The box is signed by Hakubon (?), likely a tea master of some kind.
